Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae

Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae (Shwmae Su'mae Day) is a fun, annual Welsh national event on October 15th, encouraging everyone to use informal Welsh greetings like Shwmae (South Wales "Hi there") and Su'mae (North Wales "Hi there") to celebrate and promote the Welsh language, showing it belongs to everyone, from fluent speakers to beginners, in shops, schools, chapels, churches, places of worship and workplaces.

The main purpose of Diwrnod Shwmae Su'mae (Shwmae Su'mae Day) is to to boost confidence and normalise starting conversations in Welsh, making it a part of everyday life.

The Greetings: Shwmae (pronounced "shuh-my") and Su'mae (pronounced "soo-my") are informal ways of saying "Hi" or "How are you?".

When: Annually on October 15th.

Who: Celebrated by schools, chapels, churches, places of worship, businesses, communities, and individuals across Wales.

Activities: Using the greetings, sharing videos of fun activities in Welsh, downloading resources, and promoting bilingualism.

Motto: "Mae'r Gymraeg yn perthyn i bawb / The Welsh language belongs to everyone".

In essence, it's a day to spread cheer and Welsh language use, one Shwmae at a time!.
